Louise Appleton is a fictional character in the British soap opera "Emmerdale" played by Emily Symons. Aussie Louise arrived in the village as a temporary barmaid and ended up as co-landlady with best friend Diane Sugden, before selling to Diane's sister Val Lambert in 2006. She will take a break in late, 2008 for family reasons but will return to the show after a year break in late 2009.

About Louise

The men of Emmerdale couldn’t believe their luck when gorgeous Australian Louise was announced as the new barmaid at the Woolpack. Bright, beautiful and classy, Louise was the full package. But rather than taking up with any of the young studs in the village, Louise started dating older lothario Rodney Blackstock.

Rodney

The couple had a fun relationship and enjoyed each other’s company but it wasn’t to last. Rodney was still in love with his ex-wife Diane Blackstock - Louise’s best friend - and slept with her behind his girlfriend’s back. Furious with his antics, Louise dumped Rodney but forgave Diane for her actions and continued to work with her at the Woolpack.

Murder

Her next serious relationship was with shady businessman Ray Mullan. Although he was a bit dodgy, Louise was certain Ray was the man for her and the couple moved in together. But Ray wasn’t the man Louise thought he was. A control freak and bad apple, Ray started stalking Louise under a mystery guise to get her to agree to leave Emmerdale with him. As they drove to the airport, Louise discovered Ray had been her stalker all along and a vicious fight ensued. The end result was Louise killing Ray and covering up his murder with the help of Terry Woods. Besotted with Louise, Terry would have done anything to help her - especially knowing her actions had been in self-defence. But Louise’s gratitude didn’t mean she wanted to date him and Terry had to accept they would only ever be friends.

Moving on

Louise was always attracted to bad men and started seeing Ronnie Marsden behind his wife Frances’ back. When their affair was exposed, Louise was humiliated and hated being the centre of local gossip. But she found herself in the thick of it again when she began seeing vicar Ashley Thomas. Their affair was short-lived and Louise agreed to date Carl King, but immediately dumped him when she realised he was already married.

Terry and Matthew

Meanwhile, Terry had got over Louise by marrying teenager Dawn Woods. Their relationship had a strange effect on Louise as she realised she was jealous and did have feelings for him after all. When Terry and Dawn split up, Louise was a good friend to him and they finally got together in 2004. After realising the relationship was serious, Terry and Louise decided to go into business together by buying Alan Turner’s B&B. Newcomer Matthew King offered to give them financial advice and organise a mortgage for the property - but it wasn’t just their business he was after. Matthew was really attracted to Louise and couldn’t understand why she would settle for a man like Terry. After pursuing her for weeks, Matthew finally got Louise to sleep with him and the two began a passionate affair. Although she hated lying to Terry, Louise couldn’t resist Matthew’s charms and kept going back for more. After a couple of months of secrecy, Louise decided it was Matthew she wanted to be with and ended her relationship with Terry – just as they were about to complete the sale of the B&B. The entire village was shocked by Louise’s actions and even her best friend Diane couldn’t bring herself to offer any sympathy. And it was sympathy that Louise needed when Matthew abruptly dropped her just a few days later. Realizing she’d be played, Louise threw herself on Terry’s mercy but he didn’t want to know.

A fresh start

Alone and distraught, Louise flew home to Australia. When she arrived back, Louise decided to try and put her life in order. She kept her head down, tried to make amends with her friends and even steered well clear of men. But she wasn’t on her own for long. When she met police officer Martin Crowe at a kid’s judo class, Louise felt a frisson of attraction. They became friends and after a while romance blossomed. However, Louise wasn’t just taking on Martin but also his daughter Kayleigh. Having never had children herself, Louise was a bit unsure of how to behave around Kayleigh – who worshipped her from the start. But with some sage advice from Diane, Louise muddled through and the three of them starting living happily together at the Woolpack. When Martin learned that Sam Dingle helped his wife Alice die, as she was suffering from terminal cancer, he set out to arrest him. Louise stood by Martin and this caused friction between her and Diane. In a heated argument Diane let slip something about Ray Mullan, which Martin overheard. Louise had no choice but to come clean. Martin said he wouldn't report Louise but he could no longer continue seeing her, so Martin and a tearful Kayleigh moved out of the Woolpack and Louise's life.

Businesswoman

Louise thought Martin was "the one" and she blamed Diane for the break-up. Louise is now in the process of selling her share of the Woolpack to someone who Diane wouldn't like working with, her ex-husband Rodney. However Diane's sister Val Lambert has also tabled an offer and Diane might find her worse than Rodney.Louise has started a new business venture with ex Terry in the form of buying the B&B from Alan. When Terry's partner Jean Hope couldn't afford to go into a business partnership, Louise jumped at the chance.

2007

In May 2007 it was stated that a 'much loved' character would be killed off at the village's anniversary, rumours arose that it would be Louise, as she was to be involved in a car crash after ex-fiancée Hari Prasad ran her off the road for trying to stop the King brothers court case as he had lied to have them arrested. This did happen, however, she survived and Hari was arrested and jailed for his crimes. She's now having a relationship with Jamie Hope.

2008

In 2008, Louise received a lot of comments about her relationship with Jamie who is younger than her. Believing that she wasn't good enough for him, she accused him of having an affair with a wine tasting woman. However Jamie was only getting lessons from her so they could taste wine together. The two reconciled.Later in the year, Louise feared she was pregnant. When she found she wasn't and Jamie was relieved she became unsure of their relationship. Jamie tried many times to apologize but he kept saying the wrong things. The managed to become friends again and Jamie even proposed to her. The two are now engaged. In May 2008, Louise provided an alibi for Viv Hope who was being charged with conspiracy to fraud. She is among a few villagers who believe that Viv is innocent. However Louise stated to blackmail Viv when she discovered that Viv had kissed Freddie Yorke in order to obtain Viv's cafe and post office. Viv's husband (and Jamie's father) Bob found out about Louise's antics and told Jamie but the two stuck together. After visiting her family in Australia, Louise returned to the village in September 2008 and set a date for her wedding with Jamie to be around Christmas.
