SAS Shoemakers was started in 1976 in San Antonio, Texas. The company specializes in men's shoes, women's shoes, and handbags. They are a family-owned company which manufactures all of their shoes in the United States. The company does not sell shoes directly over the internet, but are available via snail mail and telephone; shoes are offered at other retail stores in more parts of the country. Factory tours at the San Antonio factory are available. They are known for having shoes available in hard to find sizes.

A 1989 shoebox-lid reads: :"Once upon a time, long ago in 1976, two old Texas shoemakers set out to prove that American craftsmen could still create fine shoes."On the interior: :"The inside story: A long time ago, when we started making shoes, we had no money for advertising to let people know about our products. One by one, our customers told their friends about us. And those people told their friends. Soon we were receiving encouraging letters filled with kind words and suggestions. To all our friends, old and new, we say, "Thank you. We couldn't have done it without you. © SAS 1989."
