Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Islampur had a population of 52,766. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Islampur has an average literacy rate of 63%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 68%, and female literacy is 57%. In Islampur, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Politics

In the 2006 state assembly elections Md. Faruque of CPI(M) won the Islampur seat defeating Abdul Karim Chowdhury of AITC. In 2001, Abdul Karim Chowdhury of AITC defeated Md. Faruque Azam of CPI(M). Abdul Karim Chowdhury representing INC defeated Md. Faruque Azam of CPI(M) in 1996 and 1991. Md. Faruque Azam of CPI(M) defeated Abdul Karim Chowdhury of INC in 1987. Abdul Karim Chowdhury of INC defeated Md. Faruque Azam of CPI(M) in 1982 and Goutam Gupta, Independent in 1977.
