Kirkton is a community in
Ontario ,Canada , in the municipality of South Huron. Today it is a collection of homes at the intersection of Highway 23 (aka Road 164) and county line 8. Half the village is in Huron county while the other half is in Perth county.In
1861 , with the help of his brothers Robert and James,Timothy Eaton set up a bakery business in the town. It went under after only a few months and after briefly operating a small dry-goods store in the nearby town ofSt. Marys, Ontario , Eaton purchased a dry-goods and haberdashery business at 178Yonge Street in the rapidly growing city ofToronto ,which became the foundation of theEaton's department store chain.Saint Paul's Anglican Church of Canada is located in the town. The first church, built in
1862 , was a frame structure, later replaced by the current brick building. The bell that hung in the first building is still in use as of2005 .Canadian fiddle Champ, Ward Allen, was born in the hamlet in 1924.
