León Ferrari (b. 1920,
Buenos Aires ) is a contemporary conceptual Argentineartist .Ferrari employs methods such as
collage ,photocopy ing andsculpture inwood ,plaster orceramic s. He often uses text, particularlynewspaper clippings orpoetry , in his pieces. His art often deals with the subject of power andreligion ; images orstatue s of thesaint s, the Virgin Mary orJesus may be found in cages, sinks, meat blenders or frying pans. He has also dealt with issues ofUnited States influence — in his best-known work, "La civilización occidental y cristiana" ("Western-Christian Civilization", 1965), Christ appears crucified on a fighter plane, as a symbolic protest against theVietnam War ( [http://www.pts.org.ar/IMG/jpg/Civilizacion%20occidental%20y%20cristiana.jpg] ).Ferrari has also written articles for left-leaning newspaper "
Página 12 ". His work and hispolitics have brought him into some controversy and notoriety. He was forced intoexile inSão Paulo ,Brazil from 1976 to 1991 following threats by the military dictatorships. His 2001 exhibition inSpain , which dealt with torture and the Catholic Church, was met with demonstrations andprayer meetings, and even paint-throwing and tear gas. In 2004, his exhibition inRecoleta , Buenos Aires, was forced to close following intervention by a Catholic priest and a subsequent court order. Protests and government action allowed the exhibition to reopen.External links
