Yerevan , the capital ofArmenia , located in the northeastern part of the city, an amalgam ofKanakerr andNor Zeytun .This hill town is small, with a population of 77,731 [*ArmenianCensus|82] and an area about 2,000 acres (8 km²). It consists mainly of one or two-storied houses, two ancient churches (the older on a hill in a cemetery, the other highly restored and in daily use). There is also nearby a medieval well. A nineteenth-century Russian church stands facing a Russian base on the road into Yerevan. The most famous people born in the area are
Khachatur Abovian ,Djivan Gasparyan , Ofelya Hambardzumyan and Zaqaria Qanaqertci.Kanakerr played a key role in the Russian siege of Yerevan in 1827. (There was until recently a monument in French in the Armenian church to the infant daughter of the Russian commander).Zeytun was founded between 1946-1948 by Armenian repatriates who arrived fromLebanon ,Syria ,Egypt ,Iran ,Iraq andGreece .References
