Lockport, Manitoba

Lockport is a small town in Manitoba, Canada located just north of the city of Winnipeg. It is the site of ancient agricultural inhabitation, a migratory bird (the North American White Pelican) feeding area as well as a dam and lock of the Red River. The Red River Floodway joins the Red River just down river from the dam. It is part of the rural municipalities of St. Andrews west of, and St. Clements east of the Red River. Residents of Lockport include the eagle which can be seen hunting along the Red River.

It contains the Lockport Junior High School. It contains grades 7, 8, and 9, because the local high school (Lord Selkirk Comprehensive High School) cannot fit grade 9 inside its walls.

Lockport is also known for having some of the best fishing in the world to both humans and birds. Lockport is an ancient settlement, predating European history by thousands of years. It is one of the oldest known settlements in Canada.

Interesting sites in Lockport include the A&W, Chubb's, Gaffers, Half Moon, Papa Carlo's, Skinner's, Sonia's and Subway Restaurants, famous for summer evening drives from Winnipeg.

Winter brings recreational activities such as snowmobiling to the area. The Lockport Children's Festival continues the local carnival tradition.

The bridge and locks at Lockport (completed in 1910), submerged the St. Andrews Rapids (a natural bridge) in order to make the Red River navigable by boat to Winnipeg. A small Provincial Park exists in Lockport. On the grounds of Lockport Park is The Kenosewun Centre which is a museum containing local history. In addition Kennedy House Museum just south of Lockport on River Road tells the history of a 19th century Metis family.
