Terry Gilbert Dischinger (born
November 14 1940 inTerre Haute, Indiana ) is a retired Americanbasketball player in the NBA.The son of a football coach and a great all-around athlete, Dischinger earned All-State honors in football, track and basketball while attending
Garfield High School in Terre Haute. He also was a member of Terre Haute's 1955Babe Ruth League "world championship" baseball team.Basketball career
As a college sophomore, Dischinger was a starter of the U.S. basketball team that won the gold medal in the 1960 Olympics.
Dischinger, a 6'7" forward, was made the first pick of the second round of the
NBA Draft in 1962 out ofPurdue University by the Chicago Zephyrs. He won theNBA Rookie of the Year Award in the 1962-1963 season after averaging 25.5 points and eight rebounds per game. His basketball career was interrupted by military service.He coached two games for the
Detroit Pistons during the 1971-72 season, as aplayer-coach . In addition to the Pistons and the Zephyrs, he also played for the Baltimore Bullets and thePortland Trail Blazers .He retired in 1973 and holds career per game averages of 13.8 points and 5.6 rebounds. He was a three-time All-Star.

Dischinger now practices
orthodontics with his son, Bill Dischinger, inLake Oswego, Oregon . Dischinger is considered nationally as a leader in both functional jaw orthopedics and orthodontic technology and has lectured extensively throughout the United States.External links
