Green Brook

Green Brook

:"This article describes the Green Brook (tributary). For Green Brook Township, NJ, see Green Brook, NJ."

Green Brook is a tributary of the Raritan River in central New Jersey in the United States.

The Green Brook rises in the Watchung Mountains at an elevation of 410 feet (125 m) in Free Acres, (the border of Berkeley Heights and Watchung) and flows east forming the border of Union and Somerset counties. The brook then flows in a southwest direction as the Blue Brook joins it at Seeleys Pond. As it flows along the border of Plainfield and North Plainfield, parallel to the mountain ridge, the Stony Brook joins it at Green Brook Park. It continues southwest and becomes the border between Dunellen and Green Brook forming the Middlesex and Somerset county borders. The Bonygutt Brook joins it in Middlesex near Warrenville Road. The Bound Brook joins it at the northwest corner of Mountain View Park in Middlesex. The brook then flows south before the Ambrose Brook joins it near Lincoln Blvd. It then flows into the Raritan River in Middlesex at an elevation of 19 feet (5.8 m).

It gives its name to the township of Green Brook, New Jersey.

Green Brook Flood Control Project

Green Brook Flood Control Project is a flood control project in Somerset County in central New Jersey first proposed in the early 1970s in the wake of two major floods in June 1971 and August 1973, which caused millions in property damage and several deaths in central New Jersey along the Green Brook and Raritan River. The proposed flood control measures would control flooding in the Green Brook basin and parts of the Raritan River basin in Bound Brook, which partially lies on a natural flood plain of the Raritan River at the junction of the Green Brook and Raritan River.

The Green Brook Flood Control project has languished for decades due to a lack of federal funding and interest. Hurricane Floyd in 1999 caused yet more property damage and deaths in the Green Brook basin, and caused renewed interest in the flood control project. Some construction related to the project has been completed since 1999, especially in Bound Brook, New Jersey, but federal funding limitations have slowed progress in recent years.
