London Midland and Scottish Railway Jubilee Class 5593 (BR number 45593) named "Kolhapur" is a preserved Britishsteam locomotive .ervice
5593 was built in
1934 by theNorth British Locomotive Company ofGlasgow , Works number 24151, and part of Lot 118. In May1936 she was named "Kolhapur" afterKolhapur , aprincely state in western India.Initially built with a low degree
superheat domelessboiler , she received a domed boiler in April1937 .5593 hauled the train carrying
Winston Churchill fromLiverpool on his return from talks with President Roosevelt in1942 .After nationalisation in January
1948 she was renumbered 45593 byBritish Railways in December of that year. She was allocated to various sheds during the1950s and1960s , includingLongsight , Carlisle Upperby,Willesden ,Aston ,Burton ,Patricroft andNewton Heath .In April
1966 she was transferred toLeeds Holbeck and was kept there in good condition to workrailtour s over theSettle-Carlisle Railway . She was also given a yellow cabside warning stripe to indicate that she was barred from the electrifiedWest Coast Main Line south ofCrewe where she was out-of-gauge. She was withdrawn in October1967 .Preservation
45593 was bought in good condition January
1968 by the then Standard Gauge Steam Trust. She was restored during the1980s to LMS crimson lake livery. In 1994 she temporarily assumed the identity and special livery of scrapped sister and class pioneer 5552 "Silver Jubilee" for the silver jubilee of thepreserved Great Central Railway . She was repainted into BR green in1995 .45593 is currently out of service at
Barrow Hill Engine Shed but is undergoing restoration to working order.In 2008, Kolhapur appeared at the
York Railfest along withGWR 4073 Class 7029 Clun Castle . She will return to Tyseley for the Tyseley 100 celebrations. For this, she will be repainted into the LMS crimson lake livery.External links
