State Route 36 is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia, extending from Chesterfield County, Virginia west of the village of Matoaca east through the City of Petersburg and a portion of Prince George County to end in City of Hopewell.

Major intersections and points on SR 36 (east to west) are:

*U.S. Route 460 (Petersburg)

History

The road from State Route 10 (at a point now just west of Lee Avenue in Fort Lee [http://lvaimage.lib.va.us/cgi-bin/vhip_annotated/vhip.pl?&
] , revised July 1, 1936] [ [http://historical.maptech.com/quad.cfm?quadname=Petersburg&state=VA&series=15 1946 USGS Petersburg quadrangle] ] ) east of Petersburg northeast to Hopewell was added to the state highway system in 1924 [CTB minutes|04-1924-01, page 8] as State Route 1011. [CTB minutes|09-1924-01, page 5] SR 1011 became State Route 408 in the 1928 renumbering.

6.70 miles (10.78 km) from Campbells Bridge over the Appomattox River at Petersburg past Matoaca towards Winterpock was added in 1928 as State Route 409. [CTB minutes|08-1928-02, page 28] SR 409 was extended 3.02 miles (4.86 km) in 1930. [CTB minutes|06-1930-01, page 17]
