The High School of American Studies at Lehman College, also called "HSAS" or "American Studies", is one of nine specialized high schools in New York City. Since it is a specialized high school, one must receive a high enough score on the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) in order to be admitted to the school.

The school is administered by the New York City Department of Education. It receives supplementary funding from The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

The High School of American Studies is located on the Lehman College campus, one block from the Bronx High School of Science, in the Bedford Park section of the Bronx.

Due its location at Lehman College the school is often improperly referred to as "Lehman," especially by students at the nearby Bronx High School of Science. This abbreviation is frowned upon by the school's students due to the fact that that name has been traditionally used by the Herbert H. Lehman High School which is both nearby and is considered to have not as good of a reputation. Acceptable abbreviations include "H-S-A-S," "The High School of American Studies" or most commonly "American Studies."

History

American Studies was designed as a small school for about four hundred students. It was created in 2002 along with Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, and the High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College. (New York City previously had three specialized high schools, Brooklyn Tech, Bronx Science, and Stuyvesant, besides LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. The three new schools were created to provide more opportunities for students beyond the previous three specialized high schools.) [http://www.nystringer.com/html/examsch.htm]

When it was created in 2002, American Studies occupied one corridor in the APEX, Lehman College's gymnasium. In 2003 the school moved to its current location, Lehman's Reservoir Building. Founding Principal Myra Luftman retired shortly after the High School of American Studies at Lehman College graduated its first senior class on June 26, 2006, and was succeeded by the current principal, Alessandro Weiss.
