Pyla

Pyla

:"For the town in Greece, see Pyla, Greece."

Pyla ( _el. Πύλα; Turkish: "Pile") is a village in Larnaca District, Cyprus. The village is located in the eastern part of the island, in the United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus, that separates the internationally recognized southern part of the island from the Turkish occupied northern third of the island (see: Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus). The village is located very close to the UK Dhekelia Sovereign Base Area. From a legal point of view, it is administered as all other areas controlled by the Greek Cypriot governments.

The village is special in the respect that it is the only settlement in Cyprus still inhabited by both its original Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot inhabitants peacefully. The village has two churches and one mosque.

The village is also home of the same Aspis Pylas football team of 1957 ; Panayiotis Merakli (Potis), Mitros Theodosi (Karkidis), Takis Georgiou, Yiorgos Nicolaou (Sougpipis), Stelios Frenaridi, Paraskevas Theodos (Lympoupis), Ioannis Stilianou (Tsapos), Andreas Kounas, Antonakis Ioannou(Sexoutzis), Takis Kosta (Toumatsiou), Andreas Nicolaou (Tsionis).

The popular Greek Cypriot singer Anna Vissi hails from Pyla.
