A Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.) is a general academic degree that gives students an introduction to advanced theological studies. The M.T.S usually requires two years of program study to complete. The Latin equivalent for M.T.S. is Studiorum Theologicorum Magistri.
The Master of Theological Studies is an academic degree, which, for some students, is preparation for entering a doctoral program in theology or a closely related subject, and its goal is not to prepare one for ordination. As such, it does not necessarily include field education, coursework in ministry studies, or homiletics, all of which are usually requirements for a Master of Divinity degree. Despite this, many who earn the M.T.S. are ultimately ordained, and work in the local religious context. The M.T.S. often requires the completion of a scholarly thesis. The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada accredits many such programs.
