Kamla Nagar is a neighbourhood of Delhi, in the
North Delhi district ofDelhi . Today it is also one of its major shopping centres. It is situated next to the North Campus,
University of Delhi just opposite toHans Raj College . The market is famous for popular brands of fashion apparel and the spicy street food. The market is a popular hangout for college students, many of whom live in hostels and rented accommodation close by.History
Kamla Nagar was developed as an affluent residential area in the 1950s but its proximity to the University campus and an absence of popular market nearby turned it into a profitable commercial area. The market has several roundabouts (colloquially called "Gol Chakkars") typical of city planning of that era.
Overview
It now houses a mix of international brands and indian stores on the famous
Bungalow Road just opposite well known Hans Raj College. The retail stores & restaurants are located on lower floors of the market while the upper stories have retained their residential character. It is majorly known for stores of traditional Indian dresses.Another reason why people flock to Kamla Nagar is for many of its famous roadside eateries or "dhabas". Chacha Cholle Bhature is open 6 days a week till early afternoon and queues of people going around the block for his simple menu is a common sight. Every corner has a sweets shop like Vaishnav Chaat or Lakshmi Sweets with "gol-gappas" or "chaat" being a popular choice. Refreshing Center is a go-to for munchies or "namkeen" or the flavored milk bottles. The "lassi" or buttermilk and "puri cholle" of the famous Bille Di Hatti is another one of the many reasons why Kamla Nagar is one of the most popular places for Old Delhi cuisine.
Another famous eatery is Gopal Sweets Shop on the road between Roop Nagar and Kamla Nagar just before Shakti Nagar red light. Their Bedmi Puri, Samosa, Jalebi, Kachori are out of this world. And if you are looking for some South Indian street food, try Shiva just opposite Gopal Sweets in the lane.
