June 21 ,1959 inOgden, Utah ) is an American former star NBA professionalbasketball player at the power forward position. He starred in high school forFairview High School in Boulder, Colorado before attending theUniversity of Utah .The 6'10" Chambers was a key member of the
Phoenix Suns teams of the late 1980s and early 90s. He combined with All-Starpoint guard Kevin Johnson to run a pick-and-roll play that would often account for a good third of the team's points. Chambers played for the Suns for five seasons, having his best point production in 1989-90 (averaging 27.2 points per game).Chambers played 14 full seasons in the NBA, starting in 1981-82 with the San Diego Clippers. He played five seasons for the
Seattle SuperSonics from 1983-84 to 1988-89 and was named MVP of the1987 NBA All-Star Game played at theKingdome .After five seasons with the Suns, he spent two in the twilight of his career with his home state
Utah Jazz . In the 1995-96 season he played for Israeli Champions Maccabi Tel Aviv. His arrival was a big event inIsrael , but Chambers did not have the best of seasons. Most notable was the game against Spanish side Barcelona, when he shot 0 out of 14 from the field, including one missed dunk. He scored only two points that game, from the free-throw line (2-of-4). Maccabi won the Israeli Championship, but lost the Cup. Chambers left Israel and returned to the USA, playing limited minutes in 12 games with the Charlotte Hornets in 1996-97 and ten minutes in a game for thePhiladelphia 76ers in 1997-98, scoring six points.Chambers ranks #29 all-time in total (regular season) points scored in the NBA with 20,049 in 1,107 games, for 18.1 points per game average. He also averaged 6.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in the regular season over his career.
As of the early 2000s, Chambers worked for the Suns on its community relations staff.
