List of ships of the line of the United States Navy

This is a list of ships of the line of the United States Navy. Because of the operating expense, a number of these were never launched, but were maintained on the stocks, sometimes for decades, in case of an urgent need.

* "America" - given to France upon launching in 1782
* "Chippewa" - laid down 1814, but never launched
* "Columbus" - 1819 to 1861
* "Delaware" - 1820 to 1861
* "Franklin" - 1815 to 1852
* "Independence" - 1814 to 1912, razeed 1836
* "New Hampshire" (1864) - originally "Alabama", launched as stores and depot ship, then a training ship to 1892
* "New Orleans" - incomplete on ways until 1883
* "New York" - laid down 1820, burnt on ways 1861
* "North Carolina" - 1820 to 1866
* "Ohio" - 1820 to 1875
* "Pennsylvania" - 120 guns, the largest sailing ship of the Navy; 1837 to 1861
* "Stevens Battery" (not launched) - BU 1881
* "Vermont" - 1848 to 1901
* "Virginia" - laid down 1822, broken up on ways 1874
* "Washington" - 1814 to 1843
