Bill Porter (Oct 3, 1943--), an American
author who writes under the name Red Pine, is an acclaimed translator and interpreter of Chinese and Sanskrit texts, primarily Buddhist, including poetry and Sutras. He took a degree in anthropology fromUniversity of California, Santa Barbara and went on to graduate studies in language (Chinese) and anthropology atColumbia University , but dropped out in 1972 to go to the the Fo Kwang Shan Buddhist monastery inTaiwan . In the years following, he lived in Taiwan andHong Kong . Starting in 1989, he made three trips toChina , visiting Zen temples and the graves of poets, and seeking out hermits. In 1993, after twenty-two years in East Asia, he returned to the US. In 1999 and 2000, he taught Buddhism and Taoism at theCity of Ten Thousand Buddhas .
