Kern went 13-5 with a minuscule 1.57 ERA and compiled 29 saves.Kern was selected as The Sporting News and Rolaids AL Fireman of the Year in 1979 (http://www.rolaidsreliefman.com/pastwinners.aspx) as well as being named the RHP on The Sporting News AL All-Star Team that same season.
