James Lester "The Great Emu" Kern (born March 15 1949, Gladwin, Michigan) was a pitcher with a 13 year career from 1974 to 1986. He played for the Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewers all of the American League and the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies both of the National League.

He was elected to the American League All-Star team 3 consecutive seasons (1977-'79). 1979 was by far Kern's best season as he appeared in 71 games, throwing an amazing 143 innings in relief. Kern went 13-5 with a minuscule 1.57 ERA and compiled 29 saves.

Kern was selected as The Sporting News and Rolaids AL Fireman of the Year in 1979 (http://www.rolaidsreliefman.com/pastwinners.aspx) as well as being named the RHP on The Sporting News AL All-Star Team that same season. Fact|date=March 2007
