secondary school located at 3601 SW 147th Avenue in Miami,Florida ,USA . The school mainly serves the western portion of Miami's Kendall suburb. The school is named after a former 38-year member of the school board, who, as chairperson from 1969-1970, led the district's efforts to desegregate its schools.History
Braddock was built to serve the new neighborhoods of Western Kendall and Kendall Lakes. The school was intended to be a state-of-the-art liberal arts school, with the school attempting to simulate a collegiate setting.
Overcrowding
Almost immediately after being opened, the school faced overcrowding. In October 1999, the school had a population of 5,300 students. The building itself has a capacity of about 3,000 and a total capacity (with portable buildings) of 4,000. This major deficit in capacity prompted the county to build two new high schools in the area (
Felix Varela High School , and John A. Ferguson High School), located within 5 miles of each other. As of the 2006-2007 school year, overcrowding at the school has been alleviated to a large extent. The district is planning to undergo a multi-million dollar renovation and addition project. The undertaking will involve the elimination of all portables, the addition of a 1,000-student station modular building, restoration of the original building, and the reuse of the student activities office as a classroom. Completion of this project and occupation of the addition is projected to be in May 2009.
