Clearance

A clearance can refer to:

  • in chess, A positional move, where a player moves a piece occupying a certain square away, replacing it with an allied piece that will strengthen the player's position.
  • in engineering and safety, a physical distance or space tolerance, as in a truck (lorry), train or boat under a bridge as well as a train in a tunnel (see structure gauge and loading gauge).
    • in mechanical engineering, the space between a bolt and a hole, etcetera.
  • The distance between two electrical conductors in a gas medium.
  • a closeout or final sale
  • an authorization or permission from an authority, for example:
  • in criminal justice, the clearance rate is the number of crimes "cleared" divided by the number reported
  • Clearance (medicine), the rate at which a substance is removed or cleared from the body by the kidneys and/or in renal dialysis.
  • in Australian rules football, the clearing of the ball out of a stoppage situation, to the advantage of one team or the other
  • the Highland Clearances, forced displacements of people in Scotland in the 18th and 19th centuries
  • Clearance (insult), Referring to someone or something as completely worthless or terrible at what he, she, or it does. In such a manner that they are no better than or that they are a clearance item Ex: You are such a clearance medic
