Seven ships of the
United States Navy have been named USS "California" in honor of the 31st state.*The USS|California|1867, was a screw sloop originally named "Minnetonka".
*The USS|California|ACR-6, a "Pennsylvania"-class armored cruiser, was commissioned in 1907. In 1914, she was renamed "San Diego" and then sunk in 1918.
*The USS|California|SP-249, was renamed the "Hauoli" and served during World War I as a motor patrol boat in New York City Harbor.
*The USS|California|SP-647, served during World War I as a motor patrol boat in San Francisco Harbor.
*The USS|California|BB-44, was a "Tennessee"-class battleship that saw action in World War II.
*The USS|California|CGN-36, known as the "Golden Grizzly," was the lead ship of the
California class cruiser , a nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser.*The USS|California|SSN-781, is a Virginia class submarine currently under construction. Delivery to the Navy is expected in 2013.
