- Georgius Calixtus
Georgius Calixtus or Calisen (
December 14 ,1586 –March 19 ,1656 ) was a German Lutherantheologian .Calixtus was born in
Medelby ,Schleswig . Beginning in 1609, he travelled for four years in Germany,Belgium ,England , andFrance . Learning differentProtestant teachings, he tried to create a "unified theology". For this, he was accused ofsyncretism for the ecumenical spirit in which he had learned in consequence to treat bothCatholic s andCalvinist s, and for considering theApostles' Creed a broad enough basis for Christian union and communion, which might embrace both. His friends, however, stood by him, and he retained the position he held in the Lutheran Church. For all of the legitimate controversy surrounding him, he continues to be recognized for his emphasis on the unity of the church. From 1614 until his death in 1656, he taught
theology at theUniversity of Helmstedt . He died inHelmstedt .The term "
Consensus Quinquesaecularis " of Calixtus was later popular among someAnglican Latitudinarian s. [ [http://www.lcms.org/ca/www/cyclopedia/02/display.asp?t1=c&word=CONSENSUSQUINQUESAECULARIS Consensus Quinquesaecularis] article inChristian Cyclopedia ]Notes and references
