Florida , USA and operated regional services in theCaribbean . Its main base wasLuis Muñoz Marín International Airport , San Juan,Puerto Rico .The airline ceased operations on
1 February ,2007 [Flight International April 2007 [.History
The airline was established in September 2002 and started operations in January 2003 with flights from San Juan to
Tortola using Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft. It is owned by Texan businessmanAllen Stanford , who also owns sister airlineCaribbean Star Airlines , which was established in 2000. They are affiliated, but separate companies. Caribbean Sun grew out of necessity to add more frequencies on certain Caribbean Star destinations, and to add new destinations to Caribbean Star's route system. Fact|date=May 2007On
January 9 ,2007 , the airline announced that it would shut down operations onJanuary 31 ,2007 . [ [http://washington.bizjournals.com/southflorida/stories/2007/01/08/daily20.html Washington Biz Journals] ] [ [http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20070109005845&newsLang=en Business Wire] ] Flights between San Juan and Santo Domingo stopped on January 16, and all other flights ceased January 31. [ [http://www.flycsa.com/pl/News/NR-SunShutdown_FINAL_.pdf Caribbean Sun website] ]This is the post at its website: "Caribbean Sun Airlines has made its final approach, landing safely at the end of another chapter in the history of Caribbean aviation. After 4 years of safe and continuous service, the small airline that was big on service, value and reliability discontinued all flight operations effective February 1, 2007. In addition to a legacy of excellence in aviation, Caribbean Sun also leaves behind a sister carrier, Caribbean Star, which together with LIAT serves many of the routes previously operated by Caribbean Sun."
Although Caribbean Sun Airlines unveiled a new branding image for the airline, and a new fleet, in August 2007, with service due to start before the end of 2007, the airline apparently couldn't reach the pertinent agreements, and is believed to have died definitely.
Purchased by Merengue Airlines Dominicana (a Florida Corporation) on March 13, 2008, whose President & CEO John R. Russo, is seeking certification to operate with Boeing 737. Caribbean Sun Airlines will operate as World Atlantic Airways with new branding design. The company is pallning to reopen by the end end of 2008, with new domestic and international route structure, which includes cities within the United States, The Caribbean, South America and in the future Europe with Boeing 767.
