British School of Washington D.C. is an international school located in Washington D.C. teaching the British curriculum in the United States of America.

Curriculum

The British School of Washington D.C. functions under the British curriculum in the United States of America. Students are divided into four "Key Stages" of their education, which last for approximately three to four years. At the end of each stage they are subject to a standardised test taken in conjunction with the United Kingdom. The Key Stage program finishes in Year 11 (equivalent to the 10th grade in US schools) with the final tests of the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and graduate secondary school after Year 13 (equivalent to 12th grade in US schools) with an IB Diploma.

Teachers

Teachers at The British School of Washington D.C. range between the ages of 25 and 50. All teachers are either British or have been educated within British Universities.

Classes are of a relative size between 15 and 30 students with a student to teacher ration of 12:1. The school offers classes in:

Nationalities

The British School of Washington is host to over fifty different nationalities of students including: Irish, Dutch, American, English, Italian, Malawian, Australian, and Egyptian.

The British School of Washington has very limited sports facilities, though it does play host to a Basketball and Lacrosse team, as well as a dance team. A senior-student run dance team has been established, which acts as an impromptu cheerleader squad at basketball games.

The New Building

The British School of Washington has recently relocated to a 75,000 sq ft establishment at 2001 Wisconsin Avenue, NW. The school stated that it had "Outgrown" it's current facilities and could longer support the number of students that attended the school. The move commenced following the winter vacation in January 2008.

Notable

The British School of Washington has been the home of the DC champ for the National Geography Bee for 4 years.
