Loara High School is an International Baccalaureate, public, four-year American high school in the Anaheim Union High School District, located in the city of Anaheim in Orange County, California. The campus consists of 2,578 students and 111 certificated staff. As of 2008 the student to teacher ratio of 25.8 to 1. Loara is a California Distinguished School which prepares students to "innovate in service of their community".

As of 2008, the campus' over 2,578 students consists of the following percentage of ethnic groups: 0.3% American Indian, 7% Asian, 2% Pacific Islander, 3% Filipino, 64% Hispanic, 1% Indian American, 2% African-American, and 16% Caucasian. Over half of the student qualify for the reduced lunch program. Nearly one fourth of the students participate in an English learners program.Served for only 4 years.

History

Loara was established in 1962 and is one of eight comprehensive high schools within the district. The school's name is said to be an amalgamation of the names Laura and Sara, the daughters of an early Anaheim pioneer.

In 1971, Then-California Governor and Future U.S. President Ronald Reagan visited the Loara campus on a tour of the city of Anaheim.

The school has recently undergone modernization under Bond Measure Z, which includes two gyms, a science building, and a math building. Loara has an IB program which is delivering very successful and intelligent students. In 2006, the campus completed an extensive technology improvement plan. This includes the construction of the prototype for "Classroom of the Future", two technologically advanced rooms that were designed to model future prospects.

Sammy Saxon is the school mascot. His appearance is typically depicted as a caricaturized Anglo-Saxon warrior.

The Loara Seaxe, the school's yearbook, is currently and still going under some recreation and reconstruction. After the resignation of an English teacher as its adviser, poor articles and average pictures have surfaced. After the publication of the 06-07 edition, the Seaxe has not lived up to its potential. However 07-08's edition was not a complete disaster, the multimedia (art) spread was well organized and the faculty spread's new direction was among the little that were found to be well executed. The 08-09 is going to need more than a good adviser and savior to save the sinking ship. Hopefully the new editor-in-chief will be able to save the yearbook from dying completely. There is fact in truth. Their ASB is horrible too, maybe it's not the kids after all... but the man in charge. Students need good role models and examples to follow, even though there has been many budget cuts students should not need to suffer.

Academics

International Baccalaureate

Loara has one of the largest International Baccalaureate (IB) programs in Orange County.Fact|date=June 2008 Loara was authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme in July 1999, the program is taught in English to 148 students.

Students usually take IB exams in May. Students study six subjects selected from the subject groups. Normally three subjects are studied at the higher level representing 240 teaching hours, and the remaining three subjects are studied at standard level representing 150 teaching hours. All three parts of the core curriculum (extended essay, theory of knowledge and creativity, action, service) are compulsory and central to the philosophy of the Diploma Programme.

In the last examination session, students completed the following exams: Biology HL, Chemistry SL, English A1 HL, French B SL, History HL, Japanese B SL, Math.Studies SL, Mathematics HL, Psychology SL, Spanish B HL, Spanish B SL and Theory Knowl. TK. Due to its late introduction into the curriculm, many IB classes are offered as combined classes, such as Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate.

The two-year IB Diploma Programme curriculum presents students with opportunities to demonstrate and build on their positive qualities. It offers challenges—academic, artistic and sporting—as well as community responsibility, through the creativity, action, service (CAS) requirement.

Recent IB graduates have been accepted into, but not limited to, ivy league colleges.
