The town consists of two districts "Borghorst" and "Burgsteinfurt" with three farming communities each:
History
Until
1975 there was no town named "Steinfurt"; it was established by merging the towns of Burgsteinfurt and Borghorst.Burgsteinfurt was the old capital of the County of Steinfurt, which was independent from
1454 to1804 . The castle of Burgsteinfurt, the residences of the Counts ofBentheim-Steinfurt , was built in1129 , and the town grew round the castle. A broad moat surrounds the castle. The Princes of Bentheim and Steinfurt are still living in the castle, though without political power.Education
The engineering faculties of the University of Applied Sciences Münster (Fachhochschule Münster) are based in Steinfurt.
