ION Television affiliate serving the Hartford /New Haven, Connecticut television market. It is owned and operated byION Media Networks (the former Paxson Communications) and is licensed toNew London, Connecticut .History
The station began operation on
September 15 ,1986 as WTWS. It was owned by R & R Media and ran a low budget general entertainment format. In1988 , the station took over some programming from WHCT as a result of WHCT's financial problems. In
1990 , the station also began to take programming thatWTXX chose not to renew. It also offered to pick up WTXX's programming inventory in1992 , but WTXX's owner (Renaissance Broadcasting) declined. The station had added more infomercials to its lineup by
1993 . However, shortly thereafter, it was sold to Paxson, and rights to its programming were acquired byLIN Television , which placed those shows on WBNE in1995 .Under Paxson, WTWS ran religious programming in the morning, infomercials in the afternoon and evenings, and worship programming overnight. Paxson then bought WHCT in
1997 , and sold WTWS to Roberts Broadcasting.Paxson, however, sold WHCT to Entravision in
1998 , and affiliated with WTWS. The station became a Pax affiliate that year, and changed its call letters to WHPX to reflect its affiliation. In 2005, Paxson repurchased channel 26.External links
