The Blue Belt is Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania 's fifth and innermost original "belt" in thePittsburgh/Allegheny County Belt System , running a complete circumference of the city in convert|40|mi|km. The belt was originally set up in the 1940s though the current route was adjusted in the 1970s.The current Blue Belt runs relatively close to skirting the border of the City of Pittsburgh on all sides, though it does make excursions into border towns such as
Dormont, Pennsylvania . It generally serves urban communities in the northern, southern, and eastern sectors of the county. [cite map |publisher = County of Allegheny |title = Allegheny County Pennsylvania Information Map |accessdate = 2008] In its path around the city, the belt crosses or joins PA 8, PA 28, PA 51, PA 88, PA 121, and PA 837. It also briefly joins US 19. Only a small portion of the route (on PA 28) is afreeway . The belt crosses theOhio River on theMcKees Rocks Bridge , theAllegheny River on theHighland Park Bridge and theMonongahela River on theHomestead High Level Bridge .References
