Tom Colbert (born
December 30 ,1949 ) is currently a Justice on theOklahoma Supreme Court . He was appointed to the Court's 6 seat in 2004, by GovernorBrad Henry and is the firstAfrican-American to serve on the court.He was born in
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma . His educational background includes an Associate's degree fromEast Central University , a B.S. degree fromKentucky State University , an M.Ed. fromEastern Kentucky University , and a J.D. from theUniversity of Oklahoma . In between his attendance at EKU and OU, he served in the Criminal Investigation Division of theUnited States Army . Following graduation from law school in 1982, he moved toMilwaukee, Wisconsin to accept the post of Assistant Dean of the Law School atMarquette University , serving until 1984. Returning toOklahoma in the same year, he was appointed as an Assistant District Attorney in Oklahoma County, serving in that capacity until 1986. Over the next decade, he alternated between private practice and service as an attorney with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, he served as a Judge on the state Court of Civil Appeals from 1999 to 2004, and was the first African-American to serve in that post. He served as Chief Judge during his final year on the Court.References
