Hemnes is a municipality in the county of
Nordland , Norway.The old municipality of Rana was divided into Hemnes (until 1844 named "Sør-Rana") andNord-Rana in 1839.Korgen was separated from Hemnes July 1, 1918.Sør-Rana andElsfjord were separated from Hemnes July 1, 1929. (After this the municipality of Hemnes only consisted of the village ofHemnesberget .) Korgen and Sør-Rana were again merged with Hemnes January 1, 1962.The lake
Røssvatnet (Reevhtse in Sami) is alake and reservoir lying partially in Hemnes; it has been the site of human occupation since theStone Age . Its area of 219 km² makes it the second largest lake in Norway by surface area.The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Hemnes (Norse "Heimnes"), since the first church was built there. The first element is "heimr" m 'home' (here in the sense 'closest to home'), the last element is "nes" n 'headland'.
