Lurøy is a municipality in the county of
Nordland , Norway.Lurøy was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (seeformannskapsdistrikt ).Træna was separated from Lurøy in 1872.The municipality is located on the coast just south of the
arctic circle , on the western edge ofSaltfjellet . The "Lurøygården" (Lurøy Farm) is a more than 200 year oldrenaissance garden with old plants, a pool and a nearly 20 m high Copper Beech. The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the island of
Lurøya (Norse "Lúðrøy"), since the first church was built there. The first element is "lúðr" m 'hollowed log' (here probably referring to the form of the mountain of the island), the last element is "øy" f 'island'.Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1986). It shows a sea
cairn .
