Sauherad is a municipality in the county of Telemark,
Norway .The parish of "Søfde" was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see
formannskapsdistrikt ).The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Sauar (Norse "Sauðar"), since the first church was built here. The name is the plural form of "sauðr" m 'spring, issue of water'. The meaning of the combination "Sauherad" (Norse "Sauðaherað") is 'the district ("herað") of Sauðar'. (See also the names
