Hof is a
municipality in the county ofVestfold ,Norway .Hof was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see
formannskapsdistrikt ).It had 3,031 inhabitants as of January 1, 2002. The municipality of Hof covers 164 km², of which 140 km² is land, 17.9 km² is farmland and 125.1 km² is forests. The municipality consists of the three parishes of Hof,
Eidsfoss andSundbyfoss . Hof is a typical agricultural andforestry municipality and its largest industry is a lumber mill. Hof lies in the climate zone best suited for agriculture in Norway. Therefore, wheat is one of the most important agricultural products of the municipality. Hof is known for its greathunting andfishing resources.The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Hof (Norse "Hof" n), since the first church was built here. The name is identical with the word "hof" n 'pagan temple (for the Norse Gods)'.
Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1992). It shows three blades of water lily (to represent the many small lakes in the municipality).
