Eidsberg is a municipality in the county of Østfold,
Norway . The center of Eidsberg is the town ofMysen . Neighboring municipalities areRakkestad ,Askim ,Skiptvet ,Trøgstad andMarker in Østfold, andAurskog-Høland inAkershus .Eidsberg was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see
formannskapsdistrikt ). The town ofMysen was separated from Eidsberg as a municipality of its own July 1, 1920 - but it was again merged with Eidsberg January 1, 1961.One of Eidsberg's
sister cities isNässjö in Sweden.The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Eidsberg (Norse "Eiðsberg"), since the first church was built here. The first element is the genitive case of "eið" n 'path around a waterfall', the last element is "berg" n 'mountain'.
Until 1847 the name was written "Edsberg".
