Askim has always been a strategic point in wars due to its relative easy crossing of the river. The last battle between Norway and Sweden was fought at the crossing over Glomma in 9th of August 1814. There is a yearly historical reenactment, as well as a stone monument at Langnes to commerate this event.
At Fossum bridge the Norwegian Army defended the crossing against invading Germans during the first days ofWorld War II .The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Askim (Norse "Askheimr"), since the first church was built here. The first element is "askr" m '
ashtree ', the last element is "heim r" m 'home, homestead, farm'.Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1963). It shows three rivers, and it is meant to represent three waterfalls in the municipality: Kykkelsrud, Solbergfoss and Vamma.
