Mission kill

Mission kill
A tank sunk in 5 feet (1.5 m) of water waits for towing equipment. The Tank Commander gives vent to his feelings with a string of unprintable phraseology, while his driver uses a helmet to bail out the interior. Okinawa. 05/1945

A mission kill is the result of an attack or damage inflicted by a weapon that does not destroy a military vehicle but results in it taking no further part in its intended mission.

Examples

  • A ground attack aircraft attacked by a fighter aircraft or surface to air missile might jettison its bombs in order to get away—even though it escapes it is unable to complete its original mission, and has thus suffered a mission kill.
  • A mobility kill or firepower kill to a tank.
