"The Box" is an upcoming horror film based on the 1970 short story "Button, Button" by author Richard Matheson. The film is written and directed by Richard Kelly and stars Cameron Diaz and James Marsden as a couple who receive a box with a mysterious power. Production began on November 2007 and finished by February 2008. A release date is on March 20, 2009.

Premise

The plot is set in Richmond, VA in the year 1976. An unhappily married couple (Diaz and Marsden) receive a box from a mysterious stranger (Langella), who tells them that pushing a button on the box will award them with a large monetary sum, and simultaneously, someone the couple does not know will die.

Production

Director Richard Kelly wrote a script based on the 1970 short story "Button, Button" by author Richard Matheson. The project was funded with a budget of over $30 million by Media Rights Capital. Kelly described his intent for the film, "My hope is to make a film that is incredibly suspenseful and broadly commercial, while still retaining my artistic sensibility." Actress Cameron Diaz was cast into the lead role in June 2007. Some filming took place on the Milton Academy campus.
