The Little Minnesota River is a
headwaters tributary of theMinnesota River in northeasternSouth Dakota and west-centralMinnesota in theUnited States . Via the Minnesota River, it is part of theMississippi River watershed.Course
The Little Minnesota rises from the
Coteau des Prairies inMarshall County, South Dakota near the town of Veblen and flows generally southeastward through Roberts County, where it collects two small tributaries, Standfast Creek and theJorgenson River . Near the Minnesota state line, it passes within a mile ofLake Traverse , part of theHudson Bay watershed, from which it is separated by a lowcontinental divide . The river enters Minnesota at the town of Browns Valley and shortly entersBig Stone Lake , which is drained by the Minnesota River. The region between Lake Traverse and Big Stone Lake is known as theTraverse Gap ; it was formed byGlacial River Warren which drainedLake Agassiz (the lakebed of which is now theRed River Valley ) toward the end of the last of theice age s.ee also
