Sarandí Grande is a city in the north of the Florida Department of central Uruguay. It is located on the intersection of Route 5 with Route 42, about 140 kilometres (87 mi) from Montevideo, 43 kilometres (27 mi) north-northwest of Florida, the capital city of the department, and 43 kilometres (27 mi) south-southeast of Durazno, the capital city of the Durazno Department.

History

It was founded in 1874 around a railway station. Its status was elevated to "City" category on 1 July 1953 by decree Ley No. 11.960.^[1]

Population

In 2004, Sarandi Grande had a population of 6,362.^[2] It is the second largest city of the department.
