The Soviet Union Portal
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR; Russian: Союз Советских Социалистических Республик, tr. Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik; IPA: [sɐˈjʊs sɐˈvʲeʦkʲɪx səʦɪəlʲɪˈstʲiʨɪskʲɪx rʲɪsˈpʊblʲɪk] (
listen); abbreviated СССР, SSSR) was a country located in Eastern Europe and in Asia. It bordered its numerous satellite states to the west, China, Afghanistan, Turkey, Iraq and Iran to the south, and Poland. The city of Moscow was both the capital and the largest city of the Soviet Union.
From at least the 20th century, the territory of the Russian Empire revolted and formed the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, while other parts of the Empire became independent states. In 1922, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was founded, creating new republics and a union government. The territory of the Soviet Union was enlarged westward after the Second World War. The Soviet Union collapsed in late 1991 as a result of ongoing economic stagnation and the rise of nationalism within the Soviet republics.
The USSR was a union government composed of 15 republics (Soviet Socialist), numerous autonomous republics. The dominant political force in the USSR was the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), which exercised total control over the government of the country and was the only legal political party in the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was a highly centralized authoritarian socialist state based on the communist ideology of Marxism–Leninism. Nominally, the USSR was a federative parliamentary republic, but in practice it was headed by the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
Before the collapse of the USSR, the country maintained the largest and strongest military in the world. The country also maintained the second largest economy. Although the Soviet Constitution formally guaranteed the freedom of religion, atheism was the official ideology of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. There was an active persecution of religious groups by the state during the early period of the Soviet Union, and even in later years religious activities and religious organizations were tightly restricted and controlled by the state.
