Sam's Club controversy

The possible construction of a Sam's Club led to a major controversy in 2009 for many in the area—and around the U.S. and the world—because dirt for the site of the hoped-for store was being taken by a city-directed, non-governmental development company from a hill crested by a 1,500-year-old Native American mound. Attention to that destruction also brought to light similar damaging site work on the city's behalf several months later. The objections to the actions of the city and of Mayor Leon Smith expanded to other projects. A site just across an adjacent creek, already studied by a respected archaeologist and deemed a major Mississippian-era community with valuable artifacts, was being turned into sport fields; the U.S. Corps of Engineers stopped the project, however, because the contractor, after turning up ancient remains, failed to notify proper authorities and dispose of them according to law.

New Publix store

It was announced that there will be a Publix supermarket built across from the Exchange on Leon Smith Parkway.
