Owen McAuley

Owen McAuley

Owen McAuley (born 5 October 1973 in Belfast, Northern Ireland) is a British auto racing driver.

Racing career

He started karting in his native Northern Ireland, becoming national champion three years running from 1989 to 1991. In 1992 he raced in the Northern Ireland Formula Ford Championship, finishing the season in fourth place. In 1993 he entered the Formula Vauxhall Lotus Winter Series, with two wins. This was followed in 1994 by winning the Formula Vauxhall Lotus title, including four race wins. Another title came in 1995, winning the International Formula 3 Cup.

BTCC

His most famous moment came with a drive in the British Touring Car Championship in 1996 with a Nissan Primera for the Rouse Sport Team. The team failed to get full factory support from Nissan, who had pulled out from funding a works team after poor showings in previous seasons. Two 1995 spec cars were entered at the beginning of the year, until one new car became available half way through the season. The new car was given to team mate Gary Ayles, and McAuley was unhappy about this, and subsequently left the team after the Grand Prix support race at Silverstone. He finished the season in eighteenth place overall with three championship points. His car was ineligible for the Total independents cup as the team had some factory support.
