Orathy is a village in Madurantakam taluk, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the most urbanized village of Kanchipram District but it is still primarily rural. There are more than 5000 inhabitants, and the village has an established caste system.
Religion
More than 80% of the village’s population are Hindus. There are also Christians and Muslims in the village.
Caste system
The Brahmins of the highest caste are distinguishable by a white mark on their forehead. Their work was primarily confined to religious activities and astrological studies. They were almost wholly dependent on villages gifted to them by successive kings. The Brahmins way of life was marked by simple living and high thinking. Thuluva Vellalar took to a large scale agriculture, supervising large farms and earning income from the sale of the produce. The Shaanaars emerged as a prosperous mercantile community. The untouchables are the main agricultural laborers. The lower castes did the jobs assigned to them. In this village, there were also dhobis and barbers.
Temple
The powerful god Shri.Selliyamman is located at the border of the village, the temple was built by Mr.O.P.Chellappa(Ex.Chairman). The grand festival was celebrated by every year, it is the famous festival of the surrounding villages.
