This shallow lake was formed when Colonel John By built the Rideau Canal. It is a popular fishing spot and location for cottagers. Chaffey's Lock and Davis Lock are the two locks on this passage. Davis Lock separates Lake Opinicon from Sand Lake, and Chaffey's Lock borders with Indian Lake. Chaffey's Lock is also home to a tourist and cottage community; the Opinicon Hotel, a historical resort, is located there.
The Queen's University Biological Station, built in 1945, also shares the lake. In May 2010, Sugarbush Island was designated a conservation area.
