Operation Re-Entry was a drug rehabilitation program for "wayward kids" in operation from approximately 1969 to 1980. It was located on 36th street and Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, Florida. It subsisted mainly on city funding and community support; there was also at least one federal grant in the beginning. It's founder was an alumni of Synanon by the name of Warren Klein. The staff who ran the program ranged from former drug addicts who had spent years in full time drug rehab programs, a probation officer named Robert (Bob) Caperton, Maurice Sonet who was s subscriber to Scientology and Zen practices, as well as graduates of Operation Re-Entry. It's methods of straightening out these children were through group sessions, its full time programs, isolation from most everyone not in the program, humiliation (known as verbal haircuts), shaving heads of boys, putting kids in pens, having girls wear stocking caps, scrubbing stairs and floors with a toothbrush, and many more debasing tactics. There is very little discussion on the WWW about this short lived program. It is possible that several hundred children came through their doors.
Here are two short links regarding the beginning of the end of this program:
