Operation Pax Romana

Operation Pax Romana

Operation Pax Romana, which is Latin for Roman Peace, was a secret German operation which was ordered by Hitler himself. The purpose of this operation was to kill all gypsys, Jews and other undesirables in Romania. Although if a gypsy was seen the Germans would normally take him or prisoner, but this was a large scale operation and involved thousands of SS and Wehrmacht troops. It is estimated that 100 000 Jews, gypsys and others were killed. From 1942-1943. The man in charge of this operation was Colonel Johannes Jodl. Although little is known about this Operation most people believe that the undesirables that were captured over the year long period were shipped to Auschwitz and various other camps. Closer to the end of the war when Romania was taken by the Russians several allied war crimes investigators who had heard rumors about this operation traveled to Romania to find facts. They learned that Jodl was the one in command and heard that he had escaped. Then later after the war and American who was investigating Nazi escapees in Brazil saw a man walking down the street. He thought he looked familiar. He then realized it was Johannes Jodl. After spying on him for a while he learned that he had changed his name to Jose Farias and had married a Brazlian woman. Despite all of this charges were never laid.
