Oni was founded in 1998 and owes its creation to the liberalisation of the telecommunications Portuguese market. The original shareholder structure was formed by 4 of the major Portuguese corporate groups - EDP, Millennium BCP, Brisa and Galp Energia[2], enabled the company to start is operations with an unusual capacity of resources and infrastructures achieving an important market share: 22% in the corporate and carriers, one of the largest market share in these segments among all non incumbent operators in Europe.[3][4]
Oni is therefore linked to the emergence of Next Generation Networks (NGN) in Portugal[5], essential to serve the increasingly demanding needs of corporate customers. The Company explores since then its own NGN which provides the most advanced communications solutions to the market.
In 2007, Oni was acquired by Winreason SA, and focused exclusively on the corporate and carriers market. Since then the company operates under the commercial brand Oni Communications.[6]
Oni Communications is a Portuguese wireline operator focused exclusively on serving large companies, public entities and international operators, with a comprehensive portfolio of solutions that go beyond connectivity, integrating Platforms, Infrastructure, Applications and Managed Services. The company’s strategy is defined by the combination of two concepts: “integrating-operator” and “exporter- operator”.[citation needed]
Regarding the “Integrating-operator” concept, Oni Communications focuses on integrated voice, data, video, Internet and Managed Services, with an increasing component of information systems and applications (which we refer to as Telecom-based IT solutions). These integrated solutions are always customized, in a progressive manner, to the specific needs of each customer.[citation needed]
The “Exporter-operator” concept is based on the establishment of partnerships with the largest international telecommunications operators, which function as a channel to conquer the Portuguese component of European or global networks contracted by large multinationals from telecommunications operators with worldwide presence.
In 2009 the foundation of two new companies - Hubgrade and Knewon- enriched the portfolio of Oni Group.
Hubgrade - Integrated Technology Services - aims to reinforce Oni Communications technical expertise, which will meet the different requirements of integrated technology services of the corporate market.
Knewon - Active Knowledge for Leading Solutions, is the result of the recognized expertise[citation needed] and consolidated experience of Oni Communications in the development of integrated telecommunications and information technologies solutions.

Positioning
Oni Communications has a market approach, based on the "youniversal" concept which stands for the alliance between the singular (specific requirements of each client - you[who?]) and the global (universal solutions - universal), resulting customized tailor-made solutions.
Sustainability
Since 2007, Oni Communications has considered sustainability as fundamental attribute that influence the definition and execution of the company’s strategy in the short, medium and long term.
As a result of the economic sustainability of Oni Communications, the company recorded net profit for the first time in 2008[12][13] and strongly increased it in 2009[1], having systematically achieved the financial objectives set forth for the past three years. As a result of the continuing relevance attributed to sustainability, in terms of economic impact and social development for future generations, the following initiatives are worth to highlight: at a technological level, the investment in Next Generation Network (NGN), with the opening of the first Next Generation Operations Centre; at an environmental level, the attainment of the ISO 14001 certification for the head office and the launch of the environmental responsibility program GoforthePlanet; and, at a social level, the launch of the charitable program GoforOthers and three other Programs for its employees (GoforWellness – health and well-being, GoforEducation – training and GoforChange – mood set for Change) which resulted in Oni Communications being one of the Best Companies to Work For in 2009 and the only telecommunications operator amongst the 25 largest companies[9]. In 2010, it was again considered as one of the “Best Companies to Work for” having also received a special mention as the company with the best performance compared to the previous year..[11]
Achieving an excellent environmental performance is an objective that the company is deeply committed to[citation needed], having established the most ambitious target in 2009: to be a Zero Carbon company by 2020. The attainment of this long term objective, which implies compensating CO2 (direct and indirect) emissions by neutralising them, dictates the way in which the company faces its environmental responsibility in the present, encouraging a systematic adoption of processes which aim at improving the environmental efficiency of its operations. The next challenge is to attain the environmental certification for the company as a whole.[citation needed]
