Oliphant Baronets

Creation

There is one known baronetcy creation in the name Oliphant. The Complete Baronetage II p. 367 ^[1] states that this baronetcy was created on 28 July 1629; was sealed on 24 August 1629, is destined to heirs male whatsoever and is not evident in the Register of the Great Seal. The first baronet, Sir James, is designated with the Latin term ‘miles baronettus' in setting up what would now be termed a Law Commission by Charter v12 October 1630 [RMS VIII 1655.]^[2]

The baronets to date are:

1. 1. Sir James Oliphant of Newton and Muirhouse. m.(1st) Marjory, dau. of Patrick Graham of Inchbraikie. m.(2nd) Giles, dau. of George Moncrieff, of Readie. d.1648;
   2. Sir James Oliphant of Newton. b. circa 1612. dsp. 1659;
   3. Sir George Oliphant of Newton. Retoured heir to his brother James,1674. m.(1st) 1st Margaret, dau. of James, 2nd Lord Rollo. m.(2nd) Margaret dau. of David Drummond of Invermay. dsp.circa.1701.

Thereafter the baronetcy devolved to the heir of the first baronet's grandfather, Thomas Oliphant of Freeland, whose ancestry has not yet been proved. In consequence, the baronetcy is listed as dormant as of August 2010.
