Old Southwest

The Old Southwest is a term used to refer to the area of the United States west of the Appalachians and south of the Ohio which were settled in the early nineteenth century, especially the states of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. These areas were known particularly for their plantation-based economies, focusing on production of agricultural cash crops like cotton and sugar through slave labor.
